HOU Telescopes

In the beginning, HOU students requested images from a 30" automated telescope at Leuschner Observatory of the U.C. Berkeley astronomy department. HOU is now using the LBNL Nearby Supernova Search Telescope which is also a 30" and is soon to moved to a very dark site at Chew's Ridge near Monterey, CA.

With the increased demand for image requests, HOU has gathered a group of collaborators with telescopes in Hawaii, Illinois, California, Washington, Sweden, and Australia that are working together to form a network of automated telescopes for education.. Student requests will be processed by the network to decide which telescope is best suited for the particular request, considering weather, geography, scheduling and equipment. This network will provide fast turn-around for student requests and allow real-time observing in certain cases because of the various time zones of the telescopes.
